Ms. Rinnada Jindara is a mother who experienced the risk of preeclampsia and preterm birth after doctors detected a 10 cm tumor in her uterus while she was pregnant. When she was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes, it placed her pregnancy at high risk of preeclampsia, and the baby being born at a smaller than average size due to decreased blood flow in the uterus and placenta. Not only that, but doctors also detected that she had cervical insufficiency (a short cervix), which is known to cause miscarriage or preterm birth. How did she get through this crisis? Listen to Mr. Nito Lim share about the time he and his wife were having monochorionic-monoamniotic twins. As this type of cases are rare, it was hard for them to find a specialized doctor who knew exactly how to handle their condition. Most twin pregnancies are considered high-risk, and in this case his wife carried monochorionic-monoamniotic twins, increasing the risk significantly – especially the risks of umbilical cord entanglement. If not monitored carefully, this potentially dangerous pregnancy condition can lead to the loss of both fetuses. They share their experience on seeking for consultations at several hospitals before they decided to fly from Cambodia to receive the care and the treatment with our doctor at Samitivej Hospital. Preterm Birth is the name given to any birth which takes place before the pregnancy has reached 37 weeks. In addition to being the most common cause of neonatal deaths, preterm births also present a number of both short and long-term complications for the baby, including a heightened risk of respiratory disease, brain hemorrhage, intestinal problems, blindness and slowed development.
The risk factors associated with preterm births include a history of preterm births, short cervical length, being pregnant with twins, or medical complications such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
With the 3P Concept (Prediction, Prevention, and Health Promotion), it is possible to reduce the risk of preterm birth by 50% (compared to the WHO’s target).
